pg vs vg

What is PG?

PG or propylene glycol is one of the basic ingredients of vape juice. This substance is a petroleum byproduct which produces vapor when heated. The main reason why it is used in e- cigarette industry is because it keeps things moist. The majority of tobacco products contain propylene glycol because it prevents the product to over dry. PG is a colorless and odorless substance with mildly sweet taste, and it gives vapers experience similar to smoking conventional cigarettes.

Propylene glycol is also used as a food additive and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Is propylene glycol safe to use?

Some users have reported that PG can cause a sore throat, increased thirst, and muscle pain. Those mild side effects can last for a few days.

If you experience some of the following symptoms, you are probably allergic to propylene glycol, and you should visit your doctor:

  • Rash
  • Sweating
  • Loose bowel movement

According to the FDA and World Health Organization, propylene glycol is completely safe to use.

What is VG?

VG or Vegetable Glycol is another ingredient of vape juice. It is natural substance derived from vegetable oil, and it is used to give the thickness to the vape juice.

This substance is also used in food industry as a sweetener, and for pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes.

Vegetable glycol is approved by the FDA, and it is recognized as a safe substance. When it comes to vaping, there are no reported cases of negative effects on individual’s health. However, more studies are needed to confirm this claim. Also, there are no reported cases of allergic reaction to VG, instead for the people who are allergic to coconut or palm oil.

There are reported side effects similar to PG such as dry mouth and sore throat.

What are the Differences between PG and VG?

The main difference between PG and VG is their consistency. Vegetable glycol is much thicker than propylene glycol. Many users choose PG over VG because it makes their vaporizers and tanks easier to clean. Another important difference is that vegetable glycol is sweeter than propylene glycol.

Due to different consistency, these two substances provide vapers with different sensations in the throat and mouth.

Customers can choose whether their vape juice will contain propylene or vegetable glycol. Some devices even allow you to mix these two ingredients in order to achieve personalized vaping experience.

VG is recommended for sub- ohm vaping because it produces a substantial amount of vapor.

How to Decide Which Ingredient to Use?

If you are into throat hit which is one of the main characteristics of conventional cigarettes, you should probably use propylene glycol. On the other hand, high level of vegetable glycol in the vape juice provides users with smoother sensation. Another situation when you should choose PG over VG is if you want to vape in a stealth mode. A smaller amount of vapor will make you less noticeable to other people. But, if you enjoy in big clouds of vapor, VG should definitely be your pick.

One of few reasons why vapers choose 100% VG is if they are allergic to PG. 70% of VG and 30% of PG is the best ratio if you like big clouds of vape but still like to enjoy in the throat hit. On the other hand, 20% of VG and 80% of PG will give you slightly decreased throat hit.

If you are a beginner and still do not know what your preferences are, you should probably start with 50/50 ratio of PG and VG.

Conclusion

When it comes to choosing the main ingredient of your vape juice, personal preference is all that matters. The only exception is an allergy to propylene glycol. According to the FDA, both substances are safe to use. Therefore it is up to you to decide whether you want to chase clouds or you prefer strong throat hit.
