When a user inhales on the drip tip (aka the mouthpiece) of a vape, the battery supplies the power to the atomizer, which turns e-liquid filled in the tank into vapor. This vapor is then inhaled by the user and it reaches his lungs to give a sensation similar to smoking. Vaping is adopted as a nicotine fix and tobacco harm reduction, although many e-liquids come without nicotine while some allow you to choose the potency of nicotine.
What is a Vape
The meaning of vape depends on whether you use it as a verb or noun. When used as a verb, it refers to the process of vaping, however, it’s more commonly used as a noun to refer to the electronic device itself. Some other commonly used terms for vape are “vaporizer”, “electric vaporizer”, “vapor cigarette”, “electronic cigarette”, and “e-cigarette”.
If we take a quick look at the anatomy of the vape, it has several different parts but basically, there are two main components: a battery and an atomizer. The battery is the power source, charged with a USB cable or a custom charger. The atomizer has the heating element which is usually metallic coil. Some other parts and of the vaporizer are: a tube which is the main console, drip tip which is a mouthpiece, circuitry, sensor, and cartridge that houses the e-liquid or e-juice.
If you’re wondering what is vapor, and why we use the term vaping instead of smoking, it’s just because when e-liquid reaches the atomizer and turns from liquid to gaseous form, it becomes water vapor instead of smoke. Unlike the obnoxious tobacco smoke, it smells like fruit, mint, or whatever the flavor is used.
Who Invented the Vaporizer?
Let’s go back in time.
Interestingly, while many people think that it only started a few years ago, vaping has a very long history. If we browse through the history, we see that vaping has been in practice since 500 BC. Greek historian Herodotus writes in his book The History of Herodotus about the rituals of Scythians, a big clan that lived in the lands of what is now Southern Russia. While mentioning their history, Herodotus mentions one particular custom that involved throwing weed on red hot stones that would turn it into vapor, and the Scythians would then bathe in it and inhale it. Well not of the most sophisticated vaporizer but surely this was an interesting ritual that shows that people back in the prehistoric era knew the benefits of vaporizing weed instead of combusting it.
However, the modern vaporizer is considered to be the brainchild of Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, who inspired from the death of his father, invented a device that will offer the users their nicotine fix without the harmful effects of tobacco. The cause of his father’s death? Rather unsurprisingly, cancer caused by excessive smoking. Hon named called his device Ruyan, which loosely means “like smoke”. The device turned out to be a major hit and slowly made its way into the States in the mid-2000s.

Vaping — Myths Vs Facts
The vaping industry has grown exponentially over the past few years. According to the estimates, the industry grew from 1.7 billion dollars to 3.7 billion dollars in just a matter of two years i.e. from 2013 to 2015. And it is expected to go over 5 billion dollars by the end of this year. According to a Fact Sheet by Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, more than 13% of American adults had used a vaporizer in 2014. Despite the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes, many people still don’t really know what is vaping and what is a vape. And there are many myths circling around which we are going to the bank right now.
Myth: Vaporizers are a gateway to tobacco for teenagers
Fact: This is the major concern of most health professionals and institutes. However, several studies show that increase in vaporizer use in high schoolers did not translate into an increase in smoking. In fact, this fact sheet by Centers of Disease Control and Prevention shows that the increase in vaping actually occurred at the same time when there was a decrease in smoking among the high schoolers.
Myth: A vaporizer and an e-cigarette are the same thing
Fact: Well both of them use e-liquid but that is the only similarity they have. Most e-cigs look like traditional tobacco cigarette, are small in size, and come in many flavors combinations. Vaporizers are more powerful, rechargeable, and refillable devices that offer a more intense vaping.
Myth: E-liquids contain extremely dangerous ingredients and you don’t know what you are putting in your body
Fact: All the ingredients, as well as the flavors used in e-liquids, are food grade, high-quality ingredients. Most reputable E-liquid manufacturers will clearly label the expiry date as well as in the ingredients used in making the-juice.
Myth: E-Liquids contain (potentially poisonous) antifreeze
Fact: This is one of the most ridiculous myths, While the ingredients used in e-liquids such that propylene glycol is also used in antifreeze, none of the e-liquids contains antifreeze. In fact, in antifreeze PG is added to reduce the harm in case it is swallowed accidentally.
Myth: Vapor contains Formaldehyde
Fact: A peer-reviewed study published by five scientists at Portland State University, claimed that at extremely high temperatures, the vapor produced can contain Formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen. However, the same study showed that when vaped at regular temperatures, there were no traces of Formaldehyde. So, the study that was conducted to show the bad side of vaporizers, actually proves them to be not as harmful as claimed by some.
Myth: Nicotine in E-liquid can cause cancer
Fact: While nicotine is a habit-forming drug and can be extremely addictive, it does not cause cancer and isn’t a carcinogen. Multiple studies by independent groups as well as government agencies tried to find a link between nicotine and cancer, but none succeeded.
Myth: Vaporizers are explosive
Fact: After reading all these news stories on the Internet and watching the videos that show vaporizers exploding in people’s pockets and batteries venting in cars while they are charging. However, vapes are no more explosive than your smartphone or any other gadgets that contain batteries. In other words, the vaporizers are not the culprit, but it all comes down to battery safety and education. If used properly and charged with the recommended charger, vaporizers are only as explosive as your smartphone.
Where You Can and Can’t Vape – Vaping Legislations
Knowing where you can or cannot vape is very important but also very easy to find out. There will be signs if vaping is prohibited in a particular setting. Some states like North Dakota, New York, and New Jersey have already implemented the laws that regulate the use of vaporizers in public. California, Washington, Louisiana, and Maine have pending legislations regarding vaporizer use in the state. Most other states only prohibit the sale of electronic vaporizers to anyone under the age of 19. If you want to vape in a public place, the best approach would be to ask if vaping is allowed or not. How Safe is Vaping
FDA or any other government agency hasn’t regulated vaporizers so far, although FDA is trying to change this. So, answering how safe is vaping is hard, however, several scientific studies and researches have been conducted to find the answer, along with some groups defending e-cigs and vaping. Here are some of these:

At the end of the day, it all boils down to the quality of the vaporizer you use. Vapes manufactured by reputable brands use high-quality materials and hardly pose any threat to the user and same is the case with e-liquids. However, the market is currently littered with low-quality products and e-juices by brands that reduce quality to increase profit margins. Lack of regulation has allowed more than 500 brands to sell their products. The safest bet is to only purchase products and juices from only the well-known brands that really care about their reputation. Also, always read the labels to know what ingredients are used to make the e-juices you are vaping.
