Having Allergies When Vaping
There’s no doubt that vaping is far easier on your body than breathing in harsh tobacco smoke, but respiratory allergies can suck the fun right out of it. No matter how good your e-liquid or vaping device might be, occasions could arise when an allergy flare-up keeps you from being able to enjoy them the way you usually do.
Why do respiratory allergies happen, and what can you do to get over them and back to vaping?
Allergies happen when an otherwise-harmless substance, like pollen, triggers an immune response. In respiratory allergies, this usually shows up as itchy eyes, a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, and even wheezing. What’s important to remember is that the discomfort felt during an allergy attack isn’t just because of excess tear or mucus production– your throat and nasal passages may even become red and inflamed. That means that, no matter how much you cough, sneeze, or blow your nose, you’re not likely to get much relief. It also means that using an e-cigarette, vaporizer, or even a MOD might be a little difficult or uncomfortable for you while these symptoms are flaring up.
Unless you have prescription allergy medication to help bring these symptoms under control, the best thing to do in this case is to wait for your allergies to subside, use over the counter allergy treatments if needed, and avoid exposure to whatever triggers your flare-ups to begin with. Unfortunately, you’re probably also going to want to cut-back on vaping until your symptoms are resolved. Even though vapor is much gentler than smoke, it may still irritate delicate, inflamed mucus membranes. Reduce your exposure to it until you’re certain that it isn’t making you feel worse.
Even without allergies, smoking can do a number on the throat, sinuses, and lungs. While vaping isn’t anywhere near as harsh as breathing smoke, it’s important to remember to be gentle on yourself when you’re experiencing allergy symptoms. Reduce how often and how long you vape until you’re able to find a method that’s comfortable for you, or avoid vaping altogether until you feel ready again.
